Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira has been recognized as one of the greatest innovators in virtual reality by two publications.
The gaming website Polygon named Cruz-Neira as one of the top 25 virtual reality innovators in its October cover story for her work on the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment), a virtual reality room that immerses users in the experience by projecting 3-D images onto walls. Cruz-Neira designed the CAVE in 1992 as part of her Ph.D. thesis, and she also designed the CAVELib, the software used to develop applications in the CAVE.
Cruz-Neira received a Ph.D. in 1995 and a master’s degree in 1991, both in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering in 1987 from the Universidad Metropolitana.
Her work with advanced technologies, driven by simplicity and applicability, provides value to a wide range of disciplines and businesses. She has received multi-million dollar awards from the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Lab, the Department of Energy, and Deere and Company, among others.

The Future of the Sharing Economy and Implications for the services sector

Luiz Ros, Special Advisor for Innovation Digital Economy Initiative, Office of the Presidency, Inter-American Development Bank

Moderator:
Mr. Ros worked as Manager for the Opportunities for the Majority (OM) Sector Office at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) from 2008 to 2016, with responsibility for promoting and coordinating activities corresponding to the OM initiative. Before joining the Bank, he was the Global Manager for Markets and Sustainable Enterprise at the World Resources Institute (WRI). He directed the Sustainable Enterprise Program and participated as a member of the Executive Management Team. He also led WRI’s Sustainable Growth in Emerging Economies team, which engages the private sector in key economies such as Brazil, China, Mexico, Indonesia and India. He served as an advisor to the Dupont Global Vice-President for Emerging Markets Growth & Latin America Presidency. In this capacity, he provided strategic advice on how to meet the needs of low-income markets in Latin America.
He has served as a member of the strategic board for VCIII/Stratus Investment Fund. He also served as a member of IFC’s advisory panel under the Sustainable Finance Initiative and the Latin America UNEP-Financial Initiative Advisory Group. Prior to working at WRI, Mr. Ros was the Director for the National Environmental Fund at the Ministry of Environment in Brazil, where he funded more than 100 projects, including those with local communities and indigenous people in the Amazon region.
Mr. Ros has a B.S. in Economics, a post-graduate degree in Latin American Economics, and M.Sc. in International Relations/ Environmental Economics from the University of Brasilia, Brazil.

Shawn Sullivan, Public Policy lead for Central America and the Caribbean, AirBnB Inc.

Shawn Sullivan joined Airbnb in 2016 as the public policy lead for Central America and the Caribbean. He represents the company’s interests before governments, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders. Diego Molano is an international consultant on Digital Transformation of Companies and Governments. He is a senior advisor to McKinsey & Co, as well as to the Inter-American Development Bank. He was the Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) of Colombia from 2010 to 2015. He has transformed his Country with his policy plan “Vive Digital”, which aims to reduce poverty and create jobs using technology. In the last four years, Colombia has dramatically expanded Internet coverage in low-income segments and rural areas. 4G-LTE, Fiber optics and high-speed networks are being expanded to all municipalities, even those in the middle of the Amazon jungle.
Mr. Molano has a long career in the technology industry, including high level executive positions in multinational companies such as BellSouth (now AT&T) in the US and Telefonica in Spain. His leadership and expertise in innovation policies have been recognized worldwide by major organization such as the Mobile World Congress, the United Nations, the Organization of American States and publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He is a regular speaker at international venues such as the World Economic Forum. Mr. Molano is an Electronics Engineer and economist from the Xavier University in Colombia and holds an MBA from IMD in Switzerland.

Costa Rica, a Prime Destination for Sustainable Outsourced Service Operations

Alexander Mora, Minister of Foreign Trade, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Foreign Trade

Speaker:
Alexander Mora was appointed Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica on May 8 2014. As Foreign Trade Minister, Mr. Mora oversees Costa Rica´s foreign trade and investment portfolios, as well as the relationship with multilateral organizations like the WTO, OECD, SIECA, among others.
Mr. Mora has extensive experience in trade, banking and digital technologies. Firstly, as a successful entrepreneur in the digital technologies, telecommunications and corporate services areas, with over 25 years of experience. Secondly, as representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, as member of the Foreign Trade Advisory Council, the National Commission on Information Technologies and Communication and the National Commission on Competitiveness. Also as President and Vice-President of the Costa Rican Chamber and Latin American Federation of Information and Communication Technologies, the Costa Rican Chamber of Exporters and as President and Vice-President of the Board of Directors of several banks, insurance brokers and investment management funds.
Mr. Mora has a degree in Economics and holds an MBA in Finance and Banking from the University of Costa Rica.

Massimo Manzi, Executive Director of the Council for the International Promotion of Costa Rica Medicine - PROMED

Political scientist, with a specialization in International Relations and Diplomacy. Born and raised in Italy, he resides in Costa Rica since 2004.

Santiago Pinzón, Executive Director, Chamber of BPO/ITO/KPO, ANDI

Santiago is currently the Executive Director of the Chamber of BPO / ITO / KPO at the National Association of Colombian Entrepreneurs (ANDI). He was chosen as one of the 50 most influential Outsourcing executives in Latin America (ranked 14th), according to the ranking made by Nearshore Americas in 2011. Santiago is a lawyer from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Fellow of the OAS and LASPAU and holds a Master in Public Administration from the American University in Washington, DC. He has been a consultant to the IDB and FAO and has also worked for non-governmental organizations such as the International Intellectual Property Institute, the International Republican Institute and the Heritage Foundation.

Gerardo Funes is a Trade and Investment Consultant at the IDB since 2013. He provides strategic and operational support to the Trade and Investment Division. In this role, he contributes to the Division’s applied operational knowledge, as well as to the technical organization and implementation of the ConnectAmericas initiative and to the organization of international trade and investment fora. Before joining the Bank, he was the Sr. Vice President and National Director of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., where he worked for 14 years promoting trade, bilateral relations and partnerships between government and corporate leaders from both countries. Hilario Canessa, CEO, Studio 4D

He has also worked in Africa where he was on sabbatical providing volunteer services to NGO’s as well as pro bono consulting to PwC clients- working with several organizations on micro-financing of technology projects and with government agencies in Kenya and Uganda for «sourcing from Africa.» Charlie had previously done a similar assignment in Bangladesh as well as living and working in Saudi, India and Singapore.

Scott is a visionary technologist who has always worked at the forefront of the computer industry. From his start, he was wiring up TTL chips, wire-wrapping prototype boards, and writing assembly code. Prior to the explosion of the Internet Scott worked with early Local Area Network technologies and then progressed “up the stack” and moved into large scale Corporate networks while working for Novell, and then into Internet applications and services. Before the Wi-Fi standards were finalized, Scott was developing applications for wireless networking, and co-founded a wireless internet company in the late 1990’s. At this same time, and into the early 2000’s, he was doing research into wearable computers and head-mounted displays. Over the last decade and a half, he has been operating his mercenary contract development company HumanXtensions creating Business Process Automation solutions for a broad range of clients. Scott is an accomplished programmer and systems architect, and has worked as CTO at numerous start-up companies assisting them in creating powerful technology platforms. In 2010, with the evolution and advancements in micro-controllers, and semiconductor technologies Scott started to experiment again in the lower level hardware world. Since 2013 Scott has been working on Wovyn, a set of technologies designed to revolutionize the Internet of Things by bringing proven patterns of connectivity to the sensors, control systems, and enterprise applications.

Isabel Mejia Rivas, Integration and Trade Specialist, Inter-American Development Bank

Isabel is a Trade and Investment specialist at the IDB since 2012. She currently coordinates the operational agenda of the Trade and Investment Unit for the Andean region. In this role, she leads various regional and national programs in the areas of trade facilitation, export promotion, and investment attraction. Isabel actively participates in the IDB’s efforts to support the Pacific Alliance in trade and integration issues and leads the trade and gender initiative, which seeks to support women-owned enterprises in their internationalization process. Isabel was admitted as a Colombian lawyer in 2008 and before joining the IDB she worked for the law firm Muñoz Tamayo y Asociados on commercial law issues. She holds a Masters of Laws from New York University and has a special interest in trade policy, regional integration and the internationalization process of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Kerry Hallard, CEO, Global Outsourcing Association UK

Kerry is the President of the Global Sourcing Association and CEO of the Global Sourcing Association UK. She previously held the titles of CEO of the National Outsourcing Association and Director of the European Outsourcing Association and recently led the organizations’ highly successful global rebrand.

Kerry’s focus is on growing the reach and the positive reputation of the sourcing industry globally, through the development and dissemination of standards and qualifications. Manjit Singh, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, The Clorox Company

Manjit Singh was named senior vice president and chief information officer of The Clorox Company in November 2014 and joined the Clorox Executive Committee in August 2016.
